11 August: Class Task - Read the following article Land use
Most towns and cities in South Africa have different parts that are used for special things. These parts are called areas or districts. In one part you find lots of shops, banks and offices where people work. This is called the commercial or business district. In another part of town you will find factories, workshops and warehouses where things are stored. This part of town is the industrial district. The other part of a city or town is full of houses or flats. It is called the residential area.
In towns and cities there are rules about what you are allowed to do or build in the different areas. For example, certain land is to be used for schools or hospitals while other land is for parks or factories. You would not be allowed to build a factory in a residential area where people live.
TASK: In your book, draw a table with 3 columns. Write the names of the three districts as the headings for the columns. Now think of the kinds of buildings and features you would find in each district. List in the table, below each heading (try to find 5/6 for each).
Divide the next page in your book into 3 sections and draw your impression of each of these districts in Worcester. Give each picture a heading.
Complete the task by Friday when I will be taking in your book for marking.
